It is still an ongoing project.
Still working on 'Nerf this', inspired by DIVA in Overwatch.
This is not a perfect portfolio to show my current project.
I did live drawing show with intuitive music performance while two days.
As an sculptor, phenomenon is crucial factor to understand an object.
Moreover, if I could reveal 'the position' on my object, it would be regarded as a sculpture, even though it positions on 3D space or online space.
Therefore, I tried to build monumental sculpture based on intuitive sound performance.
I had no plan to draw and I just tried to focus on the sound and performance to produce more perfect visual monument.
The reason why I call it 'Nerf this' is, it doesn't matter to differentiate with 'the real life'.
The character of overwatch, DIVA, represents this.
She was originally pro-gamer in Korea.
But for the war, she works as a soldier with her powerful mechanic robot. She says like 'nerf this' while she fights.
The term of 'Nerf' was generated by online game users to express new concept of online situation. (Definition of Nerf)
This project is a new step with new media.
I know this trial is a just basic step but it would be a stepping stone to prepare new media world.
Observed and experienced history will never be a basis to predict the future. Statistics are just used to describe the past. Likewise, inductive information cannot be grounds for knowing future events.
The future has never perfectly predicted in history. Many people have tried it but it has done on only superstitious causal relationships. Even today, 2015, we still can’t guarantee if the sun will rise tomorrow and nobody could devise new tool to do so on quantifiable grounds. In such situation, my work could be a good trial to contrive new format with physical craft skills and materials, which are tangible. On a manipulated stage, I’ll show how could be possible to make it without necessary causality.
For this project, it requires five components; Observer, Observatory, Data, Production, and Stage. The observer is myself and the observatory is used for getting information to make a data chart to apply to a production line. I’m thinking of recording a pretty trivial situation in this city such as a fluttering flag over the street. And I’ll choose edible materials to make a small object with a casting process. And on the manipulated stage, I’ll show how I can predict the future with them. I’ll serve the objects I produced to audiences. To speak simply, the future will pretend to be predicted with contrivance of evidences.

This project is consisted of two spaces. The one is like a small gallery, and the other one is like an engineering room. In the gallery, there is a single monitor and audience can see paintings through the screen. It looks like taken video scene by moving camera. In the engineering room, it looks like ordinary researching room. Blueprints, a big box, a furniture, and a table are in there. And audience can assume what has been researched in the room based on the blueprints. Because they are about an elaborate robot, which seems to play an important role in this gallery. The robot could be regarded as a moving audience in small gallery because of description on blueprints.
However, all system is set in a furniture. There is a fixed camera which is sending video by taking rolling gallery wall. And it looks like low quality and technique, which is definitely opposite characters with depicted robot on the blueprints.
As a trickster, I would like to deal with two different roles; a skillful engineer and a trickery artist. If audience believe the existence of robot, I could act an engineer role but if people could see real mechanism of this system, I would be a trickery artist. Definitely those two territory is divided in general. But I think sometimes I could act both roles depending on my intention. I just wanted to break a wall between two of them by using simple trick.
This aims to zero form, make it an absolute value, and to eliminate images which contain only certain elements of the thing.
Naturally, such an ambitious endeavor could rarely be achieved practically, but when we consider the weight of images could be lightened to an approximate value of zero this becomes more probable. Using infinitesimal calculus, we can prove that 0.99999... is the same as 1 by arithmetic.
Likewise, there are infinite ways to make images appear as a zero value academically. That being noted, I have a plan to divide a value of images until the value approaches a zero value such as 0.5, 0.25, 0.125, 0.0625...... This is exactly what I’ve been attempting lately using trading jewellery as a medium to express my concept to the public. Theses are Botany series.
This work was started when I was gaining interest in signs and images. Through manipulated images and intentionally displayed equipment, I wanted to let an authoritive object be seen as accessible to audiences.
I underwent this project by the idea of antiquities. When people see some antiquities in a museum, they reagard them as signs containing authority. Therefore, most antiquities which don’t draw audiences are no more than mere objects. Likewise, most people cannot recognize if some antiquities are replaced by replicas, therefore, I made this work look antiquated. I also installed a chandelier in the object, and allowed the chandelier to be seen through a mirror located inside the bottom half. Through appreciating this work, people could realize they have every confidence when coming face to face with an object of ‘authority.’ I exhibited this piece for 2 weeks at the INSA Art Center in Seoul.
